Dog Sledding Safety: Pregnancy, Disabilities & Health

Important health and safety considerations for dog sledding.

Safe Mushing: Pregnancy, Disabilities, and Health Considerations

Dog sledding is an exhilarating outdoor activity, but it is not without its physical demands. Because the trails are natural and often bumpy, there are several health and safety considerations to keep in mind before you book your Tromsø dog sledding adventure.

Dog Sledding and Pregnancy

One of the most frequent questions we receive is: “Can I go dog sledding while pregnant?”

  • The Bump Factor: Even on a groomed trail, sleds can encounter unexpected bumps, dips, and tree roots. This can lead to jarring movements that are not recommended during pregnancy.
  • Self-Drive: Almost all operators prohibit pregnant women from self-driving a sled. The physical exertion and the risk of a fall are too high.
  • Passenger: Some operators allow pregnant passengers (especially in the first or second trimester) on smoother, shorter trails. However, you MUST consult your doctor and inform the operator before booking.
  • Recommendation: If you are unsure, a Husky Farm Visit is the safest and most enjoyable way to meet the dogs during pregnancy.

Back and Neck Problems

Mushing involves standing on wooden runners and absorbing the vibrations of the trail through your knees and spine.

  • Caution: If you have chronic back pain, recent surgeries, or spinal issues, self-drive dog sledding should be avoided.
  • Passenger Rides: Sitting in a sled involves less vibration, but the occasional jolt can still occur. Inform your guide so they can provide extra cushions and drive more conservatively.

Dog Sledding with Disabilities

The dog sledding community in Tromsø is incredibly inclusive.

  • Physical Disabilities: Many operators have specialized sleds or can assist wheelchair users into a passenger sled lined with reindeer skins.
  • Visual or Hearing Impairments: Guides are experienced in providing one-on-one safety briefings and using touch-based or visual cues for communication.
  • Booking Tip: Always contact the operator in advance. They need to ensure they have the right staff and equipment ready to make your experience perfect.

General Health & Fitness

  • Heart Conditions: The extreme cold and the physical effort of helping the dogs uphill can put a strain on the heart. If you have a heart condition, ensure you have medical clearance.
  • Cold Allergies/Raynaud’s: Inform your guide if you are particularly sensitive to the cold. They can provide extra-thick thermal suits and high-quality mittens.

Alcohol and Safety

For the safety of yourself and the dogs, mushing under the influence of alcohol is strictly prohibited. Most operators reserve the right to refuse service (without refund) to any participant who appears intoxicated.
