Packing List for Overnight Dog Sledding Expeditions

Everything you need to pack for a multi-day dog sledding adventure in the Arctic wilderness.

Preparing for the Deep Freeze: Overnight Gear Guide

An overnight dog sledding trip takes you far away from the comforts of Tromsø. Whether you are staying in a mountain cabin or a traditional Sami Lavvu, your gear choice is critical for safety and enjoyment.

While most operators provide heavy-duty thermal suits and boots, you are responsible for everything underneath.

The Essential Packing List

1. Base Layers (The Most Important)

  • Top & Bottom: 100% Merino Wool (bringing two sets is recommended).
  • Wool Socks: Bring multiple pairs of thick, high-percentage wool socks.

2. Mid Layers

  • Fleece or Wool Sweater: A thick, warm layer that traps air.
  • Down Jacket: A lightweight “puffer” jacket to wear during breaks or in the evening.

3. Protection

  • Windproof Shell: If you are bringing your own outer gear.
  • Bala Clava / Face Mask: Essential for protecting your skin from wind-chill on the trail.
  • Quality Mittens: Warm wool mittens with a windproof over-shell are warmer than gloves.

4. Personal Items

  • Headlamp: Essential for navigating the dark Arctic nights (and finding the outhouse!).
  • Power Bank: Batteries drain 50% faster in sub-zero temperatures.
  • Personal Hygiene: biodegradable wipes, lip balm (with SPF), and intensive hand cream.
  • Earplugs: Essential if you are staying in a shared cabin with other mushers!

What NOT to Pack

  • Cotton: Leave all cotton T-shirts and jeans in your hotel. Once wet with sweat, cotton stops insulating and can lead to hypothermia.
  • Jewelry: Metal gets extremely cold and can cause skin burns.
  • Bulky Luggage: Bring a small, soft-sided duffel bag. Hard suitcases do not fit on dog sleds.
