The Ultimate 3-Day Tromsø Winter Itinerary
Three days is the perfect amount of time for a “Long Weekend” in the Arctic. This itinerary is designed to maximize your chances of seeing the Northern Lights while ensuring you have enough energy for a self-drive dog sledding tour.
Day 1: The Arrival and the First Hunt
- Morning/Afternoon: Arrive at Tromsø Airport (TOS). Take the Flybussen or a taxi to the city center (15 mins). Check into your hotel and head straight to Storgata for a walk.
- Lunch: Grab a local “Mølje” (cod) dish or a quick bite at Raketten Bar & Pølse (the smallest bar in Norway).
- Evening (18:00 - 01:00): Your first Northern Lights Chase. We recommend booking this for your first night. If the weather is bad, you still have two more nights to “hunt.”
- Why? The “Aurora Hunter Logic” states that you should always book your lights tour as early as possible in your trip to allow for weather-related rescheduling.
Day 2: The Main Event – Dog Sledding
- Morning (09:00 - 14:00): A Half-Day Dog Sledding Tour. You’ll be picked up in the city center and whisked away to a husky farm. Spend 45-60 minutes mushing your own team through the snow.
- Lunch: Included at the farm (usually reindeer stew in a traditional Lavvu).
- Afternoon: Return to the city. Visit the Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen) by walking across the Tromsø bridge—the views of the city are incredible at sunset.
- Evening: A relaxed dinner at Emma’s Drømmekjøkken or Mathallen. If you still have energy, head to Fjellheisen (the cable car) for an aerial view of the city under the stars.
Day 3: Arctic Culture and Departure
- Morning: Visit Polaria, the world’s northernmost aquarium, to see the bearded seals and learn about the Arctic ecosystem.
- Lunch: Coffee and a “Kanelsnurr” (cinnamon bun) at Risø Food & Coffee Bar.
- Afternoon: Explore the Polar Museum to learn about the history of Arctic trapping and expeditions.
- Departure: Take the airport express bus back to TOS for your evening flight.
